I picked up a IOGear USB to Serial converter a few days ago, and have to say I should have picked one up long ago.I was in the same situation as you, I was kind of hesitant - and was still using older laptops for the onboard port.Unfortunately I can't say if it would work with a dongle or not - something I haven't tested.Look into the IOGear one - cost me about $25 (Which is pretty much average price for these things). Radio Shack also has one that's a little cheaper that a friend of mine swears.
