- Arrau's earlier records of those two sonatas from the 60s are included here, and as a bonus there is a Diabelli Variations from the 50s. Most of these recordings were made in the late 1980s, ie, 20 years or more after Arrau's original Philips set. By and large, Arrau's interpretive stance did not change much over the years.
- Arrau didn't begin his Liszt series for Philips until he was nearing seventy, not necessarily an auspicious age to be recording such technically challenging music; yet what emerges here is the pianist in prime form where the poet-philosopher is ultimately in charge.
